Traveling to Asia

Plane Tickets
  1. If financially possible, you may wish to consider flying in business class to increase your comfort. Also, a stopover or layover would be restful.
  2. Consult your home cardiologist about your needs.
  3. Oxygen tanks, if needed, should be reserved as far in advance as possible.

Passport

  1. If you do not have a passport, visit www.travel.state.gov for complete information and instructions for expedited services. There are also independent companies that offer expedited passport services.
  2. A visa is not required for staying in Thailand for up to 30 days.
  3. No inoculations are required for North Americans or Europeans.

Arriving at the Airport

You will be welcomed at the airport by an escort and driver. They will take you to your hotel, check you in and make sure all is well. They will give you your schedule. You will give them any medical records you may have carried with you.

Assistance and Language

  1. An English-speaking Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) will be with you the first time you need to go to the hospital.
  2. Most hotel and hospital employees have a working knowledge of the English language.
  3. In Bangkok, where traffic is always a problem, transportation between airport, hotel, and hospital are provided to you by TheraVitae. In Singapore, there are never traffic problems and the hotel and hospital are within walking distance of each other. Even so, taxis are available for less than 2 US dollars.

Money

  1. Prices in Thailand, generally speaking, are much lower than prices in the USA and Europe. Prices in Singapore are slightly lower than the USA and Europe.
  2. Currency exchange can be done at the airport or at a bank or at competitive money changers in both cities. Hotels charge a very big fee. For large amounts, ask your PCC to take you to the place that charges the lowest rate.
  3. For food, plan for $20 per day per person in Bangkok. You may spend a lot more, or somewhat less depending on whether or not you eat most of your meals in your hotel. Your PCC can assist you in finding restaurants to accommodate your tastes and price range.
  4. For sightseeing, plan for a minimum of $25 per person per trip.
  5. If using credit or debit/check cards, it may be prudent to notify your card company in advance of your trip. Otherwise, you may not be able to use your card outside US.

Hotels

  1. Your 4-star hotel offers excellent accommodations including a restaurant, fitness center, pool, and internet service.
  2. Laundry service is available should you require it.
  3. The hotel tour desk offers tours and sightseeing information.
  4. Electricity is NOT 110v as in North America, but 220v. Hotel will provide a hair dryer. Strangely, Thailand may be the only place in Europe and Asia whose PLUGS are identical to North America, so your USA laptop will power up just fine. Singapore uses British/Hong Kong plugs. You may borrow an adapter from the hotel at no charge.

Staying in touch

  1. International calls are very expensive from the hotel room, so purchase phone cards upon arrival. Once in Asia you can buy phone cards at most convenience stores that will allow you to make relatively cheap international calls. Asking your PCC to buy it is the safest way to avoid overpaying.
  2. Email is by far the cheapest way to communicate with family and friends back home.
  3. Our Asian hospital cities are about 12 hours ahead of USA-Eastern, 15 hours ahead of USA-Pacific. Variants are Daylight Savings Time and which Asian city

Clothing

  1. The weather is hot, sometimes humid, and sometimes rainy, so please dress accordingly.
  2. However, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, offices and all taxis are air-conditioned; therefore most people feel the need to keep a light sweater or jacket handy because these cities believe in cold air conditioning.

Sightseeing

  1. Guided tours are available from the hotel. Prices start at around $20-$30 per person.
  2. Some sightseeing tours have a dress code. No shorts, open-toed shoes, or tank tops. Your tour guide should inform you in advance of any special requirements.
